24th Annual Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off, Sparks, Nevada/Aug. 29-Sept. 3

This festival, which has expanded into a culinary, music, craft and end-of-summer celebration, attracts more than 500,000 people. It kicks off with a rib-eating championship that features competitive eaters from the group Major League Eating. There are 24 different cookers creating their own brands of ribs, with sample plates fetching about $6. To top it all off: A presidential pig race will feature -- you guessed it -- Obama and Romney. You can also go to Rib Village, a VIP area, and get unlimited ribs and drinks for up to 10 people. Tables run from $850 to $950 per person.
