Rolling Out the Red Carpet

In the 1990s, while at HSBC Asset Management, Michael Roche was one of the first Western investors allowed to buy bonds in India. After buying a "mere $10 million" of bonds that had helped build a petrochemical plant, he visited the company headquarters. Unexpectedly he was whisked onto a helicopter for an hour-long ride to the plant. After a thorough tour, he was presented with a "massive Indian banquet," and then returned by helicopter. Roche notes things have changed in India, where investors can expect not a banquet but a hot beverage and a meeting with an investor relations manager.
