TIPS Yields Go Negative

When: Aug. 9
What: Speculation that inflation would follow the Federal Reserve's promise to keep interest rates at record lows through mid-2013 sent the yield on 10-year Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities maturing in July 2021 down to a negative 0.015 percent. Not scary to you? Put yourself in the shoes of anyone living off of the income from Treasury securities or, for that matter, any trader who bet big that government yields would rise as the economy gained strength.
