Boat Building

For a far quieter experience, about 700 people head every summer to the WoodenBoat School in Brooklin, Maine, for one- or two-week sessions. Some come to expand their skills, others to make something tangible, says Rich Hilsinger, director of the school. They leave with experience in design and even in making a boat, such as a Fox canoe. Room and board provided on campus costs $450 per person, per week. Camping sites are provided for $100 per week. Guest moorings are provided for $100 per week.

Offers over 75 courses, including:
$1,150: Fundamentals of Boatbuilding, two-week course, includes hands-on boat building
$1,973: Build Your Own Fox Canoe, six-day course, tuition and materials
