Taxes on Gold

Profits on gold investments are taxed at a maximum 28 percent rate, as collectibles. Until recently, that meant that gold investors paid much higher rates than stock investors, who paid a 15 percent maximum tax rate for long-term holdings. In 2013, however, the gap narrowed as top-earning households now face an effective capital gains rate of 23.8 percent. For taxable investors, a better value may still be shares of gold miners, which are taxed like equities.
