Home Exercise Equipment

So many diet and exercise products sound too good to be true. A Consumer Reports study showed that using the Ab Rocket or the Rock-N-Go Exerciser to target your abs was less effective and more costly than sit-ups. The Bowflex Treadclimber TC5000 also worked about as well as walking 3.5 miles per hour, according to Consumer Reports. Brad Schoenfeld, a lecturer in exercise science at Lehman College in New York, says to start with the basics -- equipment such as dumbbells, a good bench, a stability ball, resistance bands, a mat and a jump rope.

$1,186: BodyCraft bench ($400); sets of urethane hex dumbbells, ranging from 5 pounds to 45 pounds ($700); a stretch ball ($27); resistance band ($7), rollup mat ($35), jump rope ($17) -- Gymsource.com
