The Sun and the Moon

In July, the Japanese Space Agency did something a bit unusual -- it sent fish to the International Space Station. The aquarium there simulates day and night with LED lighting so that the fish don't go crazy. Fish in land-based aquariums also need LED lights that can mimic the shimmer of sun -- as well as shadows. The lights also help coral to grow. LEDs last for 50,000 hours -- about 15 years -- enough to let slow-growing coral add 3 inches during that period.
