AAA projects 42.3 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Independence Day holiday weekend, up 4.9 percent from last year. Those traveling by vehicle will find gas prices on par with last year, at $3.73 per gallon (as of June 19), compared to $3.74 a year earlier. The average distance traveled is expected to be 723 miles, up 150 miles from last year's 573. Median spending is estimated to be $749, down 7 percent as travelers look to economize. Many travelers AAA surveyed said they would stay with friends and family.
