Millionaire Coaches

A 2011 study by the College Sport Research Institute looked at the pay of the 65 coaches in the 2009 NCAA men's basketball tournament. The average coach received a guaranteed income of $1.1 million, which could pass $1.6 million via incentives and bonuses. In most cases, a coach's base salary is much less, but contracts include compensation for TV and radio appearances and endorsement agreements with footwear companies.

In 2011, the pay package of University of Louisville's Rick Pitino was $7.5 million, while John Calipari at University of Kentucky made $3.8 million. In June, Calipari extended his contract -- he'll get at least $36.5 million through 2019. University of Connecticut's Jim Calhoun is the state's highest-paid public employee, pulling down $2.7 million this school year.
