Buying the Gear

Before springing for anything else, buy the bike. Lieto uses a Trek Speed Concept triathlon bike he says is worth about $13,000. "I had dreams of becoming a world champion triathlete, so I bought the best things I could," says Lieto. For the rest of us, starting off with a road bike makes sense. Unlike triathlon bikes, a road bike doesn't require adapting to a new way of riding, and the bike can be used in many different kinds of races. Of course, there's plenty of other gear you'll need, too.

$899: Trek 1.2 road bike -- Elevation Cycles
$70: Shimano pedals with clip -- Elevation Cycles
$450: Garmin Forerunner 910XT GPS Watch --
$32: TYR Crossblade Training Fins --
$12: Speedo pull buoy (goes between your legs for workouts) --
$200: CycleOps bicycle trainer (to train on your bike indoors) --

Running Tally: $2,943
