Fooling Mother Nature
“Mother Nature wants to be able to grow produce at all times,” says Eliot Coleman, who runs Four Season Farm in Harborside, Maine, with his wife, Barbara Damrosch. “You just need to encourage her a little.” In fall and winter, that's a labor of love, especially when you're out in sub-zero temperatures braving snow and biting winds to pick lettuce leaves or carrots. The trick to making it happen is to equip your garden with nutrient-rich soil, grow hardy plants -- and cheat a little by providing your garden with protection from the cold and wind.
