Off to Camp We Go
This summer, some 11 million children will head off to one of the 7,000 sleepaway or 5,000 day camps in the U.S., according to the American Camp Association. On top of basic camp fees, parents of sleep-away campers will pay as much as 50 percent more for other expenses -- from extra underwear to little forget-me-not gifts, side trips from camp to nearby cities and special sports programs. All told, summer camp will lead to $15 billion in spending, the ACA estimates.
