Putting a Price on School Spirit

The safest way to sport a uniform and step out onto the football field is with the marching band, where the greatest threat of injury is an itchy chinstrap.

The privilege doesn't come cheap. While studies show that nearly 14 percent of schools charge no band fee, the cost for others can be as jarring as the first time you hear your child blow into a saxophone. Fundraisers such as drum-a-thons help defray costs.

Bloomberg's Ranking Team researched the cost over one academic year, and included participation in the Tournament of Roses Parade. It assumes other competitions are funded by the school.
