Out of Sight

Real estate pros say you’ve got too much stuff, and that's without even having met you. “If a buyer can’t see how spacious a home is because closets are overflowing and there’s stuff everywhere," that's not the best experience, says Melissa Marro, an agent in St. Augustine, Florida. (Marro also runs a staging company which spruces up homes so they look the most inviting for potential buyers.)

If decluttering by putting a few boxes in the garage doesn't do the trick, rent a storage unit. Storage company PODS says its 7-foot container holds up to one room’s worth of furniture and stuff. The average cost is $170 to $193 a month per container, with a delivery and pickup fee of $50 to $75. “You’ll more than recoup the cost. Cleaner attracts more bids and a faster sale,” says Marro.
