The Tank

When deciding where to place your aquarium, remember that rays of sunshine beating down on your tank may seem to mimic the great outdoors, but the sun's rays can cause too much algae. Also, keep the tank away from easy access by kids who may bang on the glass, causing a mini earthquake (remember Darla in "Finding Nemo"?). A 90-gallon Monterey Rectangular aquarium, about 4 feet long and 18 inches deep, works well. It weighs just over 1,000 pounds, so make sure your floor can handle it. $1,200: 90-gallon Monterey tank, stand, cabinet, glass top, canopy
$12: Self-adhesive solid black or royal blue background

Running Tally: $1,358
