Transportation

It's not unusual for wealthy families to shuttle their youngsters to camps via private jets. Last year the airport in Augusta, Maine, found its runways clogged with 51 private planes during three days when many kids were heading to camp. Still, most camps provide bus service, or you can send your child on a regular commercial jet with an escort.

$380: Round-trip airfare ($350) from Philadelphia to Maine plus airport transfer ($30) -- there is no charge for the escort -- US Airways

Running tally: $13,555
