The entry fee for the New York Ironman last August ballooned to as much as $1,200. Most Ironman races, though, cost around $600. A sprint triathlon, according to USA Triathlon, runs about $30 to $50. USA Triathlon says an athlete who has put in proper training and leaves time to recover between races could reasonably do two sprints and an Olympic distance race in the first year. To run a triathlon sanctioned by USA Triathlon, you need to be a USA Triathlon member, which is $45 for one year or $12 for a one-day license.

$80: Two local sprint races, average cost -- USA Triathlon
$200: One Olympic-distance race, average cost -- USA Triathlon
$36: USA Triathlon adult membership (licenses for three races) -- USA Triathlon

And the Real Cost of Completing a Triathlon: $4,782
