What Not to Bring

The things colleges advise your child not to bring are too good not to mention. So just in case your child has been planning to bring oil-burning lamps, lanterns, a gasoline motor, firecrackers, guns, ammunition or weapons such as knives, darts, foils and swords, be forewarned that they're not allowed at some schools. (Hey! What about fencers?) More realistic verboten items at many schools: heating and immersion coils, non-surge suppressed electrical cords, hot plates, space heaters, toasters and grills.
