Because lottery jackpots are publicized, charitable organizations will often approach winners and ask for donations. "Charities will call with a specific number in mind," says Boone. "They'll say, 'You have X amount of dollars, and we really think you should give X back to the community that gave you everything you have.'" The pressure to give can be immense, so advisers recommend that winners narrow their selection of charities to a few favorites.
