Spring cleaning across America means massive landfills of non-biodegradable trash. According to the EPA, in 2010 Americans generated about 250 million tons of trash, or 4.43 pounds per person per day. About a third of that amount was recycled. California spends about $25 million sending plastic bags to landfills each year, and another $8.5 million removing bag litter from streets.
