Maintenance

Training for a triathlon requires something else you may not have thought of: mechanical skills. That means knowing how to maintain and fix everything from the brake cables to the rear-derailleur. "I carry a CO2 cartridge to pump up the tire, a spare tube, a wrench and my cell phone to call my wife just in case I can't fix it," says Lieto. Jorgensen never had a flat tire in a race until she raced in the Olympics. "It ruins your day, but its part of racing," she says.

$10: CO2 cartridges (carbon dioxide gas good for two wheels) -- Elevation Cycles
