Bloomberg Sports “Decision Maker” Tool Tackles the Competition

October 3, 2012

As the NFL season began, Bloomberg Sports launched its most advanced analytic tool yet – “Decision Maker 2012.” For the millions of people who play fantasy football, it’s all about the points – meaning the number of points each player earns for performance. Yes, we are only in the first quarter of the season, but we did a thorough analysis to see how our fantasy football product fared against the likes of Yahoo! Sports, ESPN, CBS Sports, AccuScore and numberFire.

We looked at the following categories: QB, Wide Receiver, Running Back, Tight End, Defense, Kicker and Overall Projections. And, so far, Decision Maker 2012 ranked #1 in four of the seven categories and second in three others. So yes, we knew Kevin Kolb, quarterback of the Arizona Cardinals, would be having more success than Mark Sanchez of the Jets and Brandon Lloyd of the Patriots would be putting up better numbers than the popular Stevie Johnson of the Buffalo Bills.

I’ve previously written about how the business of sports continues to be more closely aligned with technological innovation. And, we are certainly leading the way in that regard for players, teams and sports associations. BSports measures the accuracy of its model by comparing projections to the actual number of fantasy points scored per player for each position. BSports then calculates the R2 coefficient—similar to correlation—which determines how much of the variation in fantasy points can be explained by their projections. BSports has also calculated the R2 for the projections of these other top fantasy sites.

In other words, we do a lot of number crunching.

The season may have started, but it’s not too late to try “Decision Maker.”
