The Health of Nations

Interactive Graphic by Devon Hirth

Methodology: We used data from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to rank the 50 countries with the costliest health care. Taking figures from 2000 through 2009, we averaged total health expenditures as a percentage of GDP; average total health expenditures per capita (adjusted for purchasing power parity); and the average percentage points by which the growth of health expenditures per capita outpaced inflation. We narrowed our list to 33 countries by selecting only members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation & Development (OECD). Then we added OECD data on health-care access to see if the costliest systems have the healthiest citizens. The OECD data were not used to compile the ranking.
