Benefits on Tap at New Belgium Brewing

At the Colorado craft brewery, workers revel in rewards that range from an employee-stock ownership plan to their own bikes—and free beer

For the 385 employees of the two- decade-old craft brewery New Belgium Brewing, benefits improve with time. During their first year, workers get a cruiser bicycle; after five years they receive a complimentary brewery- hopping trip to Belgium, which is where co-founder (and Chief Executive Officer Kim Jordan's husband) Jeff Lebesch conceived the Fort Collins (Colo.) company. After 10 years, workers are given a four-week sabbatical and a tree is planted in their name in the campus orchard. The greatest perk, however, is the stock ownership plan—employees have a 42 percent stake in the company. If New Belgium's 97 percent employee retention rate is any indication, the strategy works. The free beer helps, too.

The Perks

1. Tasting Room. Workers head here to get a beer on the house after finishing their shift.

2. Sustainable Sanctuary. Employees have been integral in implementing green brewing practices.

3. Wheels. In the summer up to 40 percent of employees bike to work. The campus also has an on-site cycle-cross track.

4. Personal Brews. In a quarterly "drink-off," contestants try to identify New Belgium beers by taste. The winner gets a namesake brew that's distributed in-house.

5. Swirly Slide. To get from place to place, workers can opt for a one-story slide.

6. Open Culture. The campus—a popular spot for visitors and locals—offers daily tours.

7. Art. Beer- and cycle-themed art is displayed throughout campus buildings.

8. Foosball, Foosball and ping-pong tables are available for use during the workday.

More Perks: Beer discounts, medical insurance with no co-pay, gym membership discounts, on-site yoga classes, a free massage during your anniversary month, extracurricular team sports, paid time off in exchange for volunteer work, on-site composting, casual dress code, access to a hybrid company car
