Dr. Hans Schilling, a German vacationer, opens a minigolf course in Roses, Spain.
Minigolf proves a bust, and Schilling upgrades the snack bar into Rotisserie Hacienda El Bulli.
After Spanish dictator Franco dies, Schilling asks, "Why not make El Bulli a gastronomic restaurant?"
Ferran Adrià, 21, a plasterer's son from near Barcelona, does a stage in the kitchen at El Bulli.
Adrià, just 25, takes over the kitchen, starts spending a lot less time chasing Swedish girls at the nearby disco.
El Bulli gets its third star, the most awarded by the Michelin guide. "We had no party to celebrate," says Adrià.
Adrià announces that El Bulli will close in 2011, to reopen in 2014 in some evolving form.
