Toxic waters: In U.S. polluters go unpunished

Rotten teeth, compromised health, poisonous tap water: those are just a few of the dimensions of the rising toll of polluted fresh water across the U.S. Nearly 40 years after Washington instituted the Clean Water Act, you’d think tainted drinking water would be a minor concern. In fact, the problem is growing steadily. A jarring series in the New York Times reveals not just levels of toxins, carcinogens, mutagens and so on are growing but that, of half a million or so companies and workplaces that have violated the standards, the vast majority have not been punished.
