Mario Super Sluggers is a major improvement on the formula first introduced in 2005 with Mario Superstar Baseball on the GameCube. The new motion-sensitive controls are excellent, whether you're swinging at a ball, pitching or dashing for a stolen base. Fielding is lazy at times, but the "buddy move" system compensates for it. The additional modes are entertaining, as you play for points in Toy Field, compete with up to four friends in minigames or overthrow the king of the diamond, Bowser, in Challenge Mode. Online play would've been wonderful, and there's not a staggering amount of originality here – it is a Mario sports game, after all. Nevertheless, it's a grand slam if you're a fan of either the sport or the characters.
