Green Goods: Refillable Cartridges

It’s back to school and time to think about all that ink kids are going to be using, printing out “What I Did This Summer” stories. Here’s a smart idea that I got in my email about ink cartridges that are a little less environmentally destructive:

Cartridge World, an ink and toner retailer, is encouraging back-to-schoolers to bring in their existing ink cartridges and have them refilled rather than throw them away or buy brand new ones.

According to the company:

There are more than 350 million cartridges discarded in landfills and the number increases by 12 percent annually and it takes about a gallon of oil to make a new toner cartridge.

Switching to remanufactured cartridges not only keeps them out of the landfills, but also reduces carbon emissions by an estimated one million pounds per year and conserves half a gallon of oil for each laser cartridge that is reused and recycled.

The company, based in Adelaide, Australia, has 650 locations in the U.S.
