Childhood safety and thinning ranks of journalists

Interesting comments on my post about how we use cell phones to protect children, and move toward a surveillance society. One connects the idea to work, saying that good managers let employees fail.

That made me think of journalism. We have layers of editors whose job, in one sense, is to protect us from screwing up. But because we know they’re there, some argue, we have the freedom to be more careless. Someone has our back. As the industry shrinks, we’ll lose ranks of those editors and have to take more responsibility ourselves. That might not be a bad thing. And, as we’ve been saying for years, it makes mainstream media more like blogs.
