Global Vehicles USA Inc., the U.S. distributor of Mahindra brand pickups and SUVs, says it will offer hybrid diesel engines as an option on its vehicle line here starting in 2010.
GV plans to launch three diesel vehicles in the U.S. next year.
In an interview with Automotive News, GV CEO John Perez said the hybrid drive system is being developed by Mahindra and Mahindra, along with Robert Bosch GmbH and the Austrian engine specialist AVL Powertrain Engineering Inc. The option should improve the trucks’ fuel efficiency 25 to 30 percent. The standard diesels are expected to get above 30 mpg.
Perez also says Mahindra will assemble its pickups at a plant in Ohio from complete knock down (CKD) modules.Perez said. That measure is to avoid the 25% tax charged on imported pickups.
