Like sweet, sentient life from primordial goo, firm details about Electronic Art’s (ERTS) to-be blockbuster Spore by Sims genius Will Wright emerged from Maxis HQ today. The uber-highly anticipated game will be available at retailers worldwide on September 7. Look for versions of the title on PC, Mac, Nintendo DS, and mobile phones. “The wait is almost over,” wrote Wright in a press release. “We’re in our final stages of testing and polish with Spore.” Check out an avalanche of screenshots and movies at the game’s website.
The question of what, exactly, was taking so long has come up repeatedly here at BusinessWeek’s Innovation & Design department. After all, Spore came onto the scene in 2005. (Check out this early but interesting look by my colleague Reena Jana on “What Spore May Spawn.”) And, Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal has what may be the scoop of the gaming year so far in his wide-ranging interview with Sims-brain Wright. In it, the designer touches on Spore’s extra-long gestation period as well as the intricacies of Wii-specific gameplay.
I’ll be looking at the game tomorrow afternoon and will report post-haste.
