Most small businesses don’t focus on protecting the security and privacy of their customers’ personal and financial information because they believe they are too small to get caught for violating state and federal regulations. While most won’t phrase it that way, they recognize that much of the scrutiny is placed upon the IBMs, the Microsofts, and the HPs of the world. While I agree that the market makers have significantly more to lose, that does not excuse the little guy from playing by the rules. Thinking that you’re too small to focus on privacy issues is almost as bad as saying you’re too small to pay your taxes. Sooner or later, you’re going to get caught. Particularly, in the tech sector, we’ve seen regulators move forward with enforcement actions against some relatively small companies. Besides, treating your customers’ personal information with care and respect is not only the law, it’s good business.
