Podcast O' the Week: Grammarian Drones On, and On, and On....

Rob Hof

I heard about a novel method of reader feedback last Saturday on NPR's quiz show, Wait Wait ... Don't Tell Me!, on which San Francisco Chronicle editor Phil Bronstein was a guest. The paper is now running some choice reader phone calls as podcasts, including this, by someone who evidently forgot to take his meds. You think he ever suspected that his complaint about the redundancy of the term "pilotless drone" would be made into a dance mix, ringtones, and even a YouTube group?

Update: Tom Scharfeld of Whooptones clarifies that the company offers something a little different than ringtones. In his words:

Whooptones doesn't provide ringtones. It's actually a new service that lets you inject custom tones into your phone conversations by pressing the buttons on your phone or clicking in your browser. If you were so inclined, you could actually interject some of the caller's expressions into your own phone call -- along with bells, whistles, cheers, Bushisms, or any sound you upload and select.

I may be in the minority, but I will never understand why people would pay hard-earned money on a friggin' ringtone for a phone.
