NPD Group announces that computer games were responsible for $1 billion worth of overall gaming sales in 2006, a turnaround for the segment
Following the recent news that the video game industry reached an all-new high in 2006, posting $12.5 billion in sales including portable and console hardware, software and accessories, The NPD Group has revealed that when factoring in the PC game industry, the total game industry in the U.S. during 2006 posted close to $13.5 billion in sales. That represents an 18 percent increase over 2005, and a 15 percent increase over 2002, which held the previous record.
NPD said that PC game sales showed some signs of growth during 2006, as the PC game industry posted revenues in excess of $970 million (an increase of about one percent). Factoring in PC game sales, total industry software sales were up 6 percent to $7.4 billion, from $7.0 billion in 2005.
"It's refreshing to see an increase in retail sales of PC games after having experienced a few years of declines," commented Anita Frazier, industry analyst, The NPD Group. "With revenues from digital downloads and subscriptions on the rise as well, the pc games segment of the industry remains healthy."
NPD also provided two new data charts. The top ten games for all formats (combined SKUs) except PC for 2006, as sorted by unit sales, were:
