Heroes of Annihilated Empires

Heroes of Annihilated Empires has a unique charm, marked by some good voice acting and brightly colored graphics, but bland gameplay holds it back. Although it proclaims itself a hybrid real-time strategy and role playing game, it really doesn't pay homage to either genre. While it may support hundreds of units on the screen at once, managing them can be difficult. Furthermore, the artificial intelligence lacks...intelligence. Armies will pretty much throw themselves at swords and bows in an effort to overwhelm the player just by sheer numbers. Melee combatants lack power, while ranged units have too much power. The hero characters provide decent support but don't work as well by themselves. Lastly, the voice acting and comic book sequences sound and look decent, although the dialogue gets cheesy and annoying. HOAE offers just enough to keep people interested, but doesn't leave a lasting impression.
