Showdown for PS3, Wii and 360 Nears?

Cliff Edwards

I gotta say, having just gotten my hands on a Sony PlayStation 3 test machine, I got all a-tingle. I knew it didn't deliver the full functionality of a consumer unit, yet couldn't wait to get home to play a few of the games.

Setup was a snap, and the software even recognized that I had connected the unit to a high-definition (1080p) LCD set.

My first run-through with a couple of Sony's own games, I liked the graphics but wasn't bowled over by the gameplay. After seeing Sony run the system through it's paces a little over a week ago at their San Francisco event, I was once again thinking that Sony would pull a rabbit out of their hat and grab No. 1 share by holiday 2007. Now, I'm not so sure.

Again, I think it all depends on how well Nintendo executes on its strategy of being an all-family system that radically changes the way you play a game. Their idea of letting Microsoft and Sony clobber each other while Wii cruises to a gazillion sales still looks good on paper.

Still, it's hard to count anyone out until we see just how well developers for each system do on the games in the next 12 months.
