Jump's New Office Space Fosters Innovation.

Check out this amazing voice-over narrative of the new digs of innovation consultant Jump at our Innovation & Design site. It is just wonderful. Space and office environments have an enormous impact on creativity and innovation, as Claudia Kotchka recently reminded me. There is a reason why ad agencies, design shops, startups and movie companies look very different from old-line corporations.

Hey, if you don't have a kitchen in your office space, you may not be doing the right thing. Smart Design has one in its great new space in NYC. Jump too on the West Coast. Your digs?

Nicely done, Jump. As companies look to create a more creative and collaborative organization, you cannot underestimate the appeal and impact of a built environment that enhances creativity and collaboration. A creative person walking into this space would likely think "I want to work here" without even knowing what the work was.

I do have some additional suggestions, however. I noticed they are still using standard telephones. Why not use secure wireless VoIP phones, so people can carry their desk phone with them? They should also have some small quiet rooms or phone booths like in old-school restaurants where someone can take their phone to have a private call or to participate in a con call, for instance, where they may be disruptive to the others in their space. Sometimes, you don't want or need to collaborate on a specific task. Also, are their nap rooms in the space? Do all of the project rooms also have a sofa or a couple of comfy arm chairs? Is there an easy way to share your laptop display with the rest of the team? Perhaps a large LCD or plasma and easy hookup to add a second display to your computer where you can slide some elements of what you are working on. Perhaps the display can be of a shared space for each team member to post their stuff and have it immediately displayed. It should be obvious by now that I am in technology, but properly planned and implemented technology can also be a boon to job performance.

Nice job, and it's called Design Management. It's no secret that environment design influences employee behavior. The secret is to manage environment design to achieve specific desired results with your teams. As Burce noted, many of the big ad agencies, design firms, and other creative industry shops have used the design of space to their advantage for years. Unfortunately most companies don't get past putting a few nerf balls and rubber band shoooters on the desk and calling it a day.

But now as more and more traditional businesses seek to be innovative, they have come to realize that this requires creativity and design, which is something they simply use to delegate to designers et al. So now they need to learn how to manage this tricky thing called "design", albeit product design, service design, communication design or environment design.

Many business executives, design firms, design departments and business mangers are embracing the function of deisgn management as a core competency for strategic advantage. Because they strive to improve their design in order to improve their innovation, differentiation and customer preference. After all, that's exactly what design management is all about: to empower and direct design, and creativity, for improved business performance, innovation, and customer satisfaction. Congratulations to Jump on excellent design management of their new digs.
