Rocketboom Splitsville Saga

Here's an overview story I did about the founders of the pioneering video blog Rocketboom splitting up. (After speaking with both of them.)

Despite the drama of how this is unwinding, a contributing factor was that Rocketboom was still working to bring in an ongoing stream of advertising. Amanda Congdon and Andrew Michael Baron had been working together for more than 18 months, pioneering a commercial model for a new medium. That's pretty hard.

I agree with Chuck Olsen, a Rocketboom correspondant who tried to help mediate discussions at the end, who says in the story that if they were on firmer financial footing, they probably would have figured out how to work together. As Chuck writes in his blog: "Lack of money certainly doesn't help most relationships."

I think the Rocketboom split had something to do with fried food, or lack thereof. If people only took a minute to sit back and enjoy a good meal, it's possible to work out any matter... If you see Amanda, tell her to shoot down South for some comfort food - we've got a hot plate waitin' on 'er.

Heather- I don't think that Rocketboom's split represents the future failure of all videoblogs as businesses. I believe that Rocketboom was just particularly at risk for financial difficulties since they were a daily show.

I, personally, have a weekly show so I don't have to worry about time as much as Amanda and Andrew did. I was originally planning to make a daily show, but I realized that it would leave me no time to develop any sort of business relationships.

If people want to start a daily show on the internet as a business and survive, it would be incredibly helpful if they had sponsors from the begining. As online video becomes more and more popular (thanks to pioneers like RB!), the future of professional online videoblog shows will boom.

We loved what she was doing, but it was also his idea to do it. They were two great parts of a fantastic recipe. Of course, if they want to apply that to food and wine, we'd love to see them on!
