Time to Unwind

James Mehring

Lyn and I liked to take a nice vacation each year. Taking a week or so off allowed us to escape the pressures of work and school. It allowed us to relax and clear our minds.

Now that we have a baby such trips are not likely in the near future. At the same time, both my wife and I probably could use a break from the daily grind even more. Don?? get me wrong, there is nothing in the world better than hearing my daughter laugh or seeing her cheeks smeared with sweet potatoes or apple sauce. But it takes a lot of energy to manage everything. And I suspect parenting will only require more energy in the coming months and years.

Taking a long vacation right now with our baby would be a challenge. We are traveling to Pittsburgh to visit family over Memorial Day weekend and the list of baby related gear accompanying us is long. Factoring in the time needed for naps, feeding, changing and the early bedtime, and it would seem difficult to completely unwind.

However, I think there may be a possible alternative. I took a couple days off this month for a short vacation to Moscow (not the town in Idaho). A friend and I left our jobs early on Wednesday afternoon and returned Sunday afternoon. It was a long haul but well worth the 9+ hour flight. It turned out to be a fun adventure and I felt surprisingly recharged as I returned to the office on Monday.

I really like to travel so I got to do something that was fun for me. Exploring Moscow allowed me to forget about the office and classes for a few days. Of course, it wasn?? perfect. Lyn was back at home taking care of our baby. And I missed both my wife and my daughter. That was something I couldn?? and didn't want to block out.
