TV is Making Our Kids Fat: The Sequel
This study from my alma mater, Penn State, just crossed my inbox, and works well with Cathy's posting on research linking television to overweight toddlers.
I have a confession: Sometimes I put my son 17-month-old son Leo in his crib, and let him watch TV in the morning. Usually, this only happens if I need to shower, and there is no one (read: husband or caregiver) around to supervise him. But I hate doing it.
We are probably moving soon, and I already plan to take the TV out of his room, so that should help.
How do you monitor (and control) your children's television viewing habits?

While we all know what a perfect parent should be and we usually try to be one, it's impossible. I hate it too, but the TV does come in handy as a "babysitter."
Like when things like showering, an item or two for work, housework, etc., just need to be done when no one else is around.
But, like smart parents, all things in moderation. The good and the bad.

we just don't haave a tv in the house. when i need a convenient *babysitter* i put on age appropriate dvds for the sweetest boy to play on our computer
personally, i think the worst thing to expose kids to is advertising. i mean, it reaches us on such a primitive level that even kids get absorbed by it. we are teaching them to be good viewers of ads and good (unthinking) consumers by putting them in front of commercial TV

Don't feel so guilty! Maybe our grandparents sat our parents in front of the radio. We used the TV when our kids were younger as a handy 30 minute babysitter when we really needed it. And as much as I couldn't stand Barney, at 2:00 in morning when my son had croup, it calmed him down and he started breathing normally. We also tended only let our kids watch PBS or video tapes (far fewer ads). Other than that, we always restricted TV time for the rest of the day. We followed the American Pediatric guidelines for how much screen time the kids should have if any, by their age. And that included computer and now video game time. We set the rules early but within reason, were willing sometimes to break them. We have always tried to just balance it out. Some days, especially in the summer, there would be no TV at all. Other times, such as when one of them was sick, we indulged them with more. (or the six hour stretch one year when we were struggling with our taxes). Today, there are no TV's in the playroom or in their bedrooms, and believe it or not, even now at 7 & 10, they always ask permission to turn any screen on.

I heard the blame being put on other things,
but T.V making our kids fat! Be for real! It's
the foods they eat that makes them fat. My 3 sons
are not fat and they watch TV, video games,
computers, Yes we are a Vegeterian family, maybe
less meat and potatoes would be the answer! LOL
