Would you take steroids to make you smarter?

Stephen Baker

Mike Mandel has a very provocative post about steroids. Would we risk using them if they made us 30% smarter? How about if we knew our colleagues were using them, or the Chinese?

I was just thinking about basically the same subject last week ( ).

Would you cheat in an exam if every one else was? I sure hope not, because in the end, dishonesty always catches up with you. Also, I am not going to shortchange my future (i.e. health) for short term gain, but that's me. I suspect a big chunk of the world's population would probably say yes.

There are deeper ramifications though. Forget steroids. Supposing a "get smarter" drug is developed that is perfectly harmless, legal and acts by enhancing some kind of brain activity. There, I think the grey area would become the differences between the haves and the have nots.

If I took steroids to make me smarter, I wouldn't be very smart then, would I?
