Merriman Curhan Cuts Distributed Energy Systems to Neutral

Merriman Curhan downgraded Distributed Energy Systems (DESC) to neutral from buy, explaining that the company had a shortfall in the fourth quarter.

Analyst Brion Tanous says the company blamed the results on weakness in its distributed generation systems business. The analyst anticipates soft revenues in the first half of 2006 resulting from the timing of orders and lagging effects of an unpredictable spike in natural gas prices. The company forecast 25% lower first quarter revenue, and a similar loss to year-ago results of 13 cents. Tanous widens his 30 cents 2006 loss estimate to 46 cents loss, cuts his $65.4 million revenue estimate for 2006 to $45.9 million, his 5 cents 2007 loss estimate to 26 cents loss, and his $91.1 million revenue estimate for 2007 to $65.7 million.
