Edgeio Launches

Rob Hof

Edgeio, the new classified-ad service of entrepreneurs and bloggers Keith Teare and Mike Arrington, has just launched publicly. Here's how it works, but essentially, the site vacuums up items tagged "listing" from blogs and ultimately other sites and aggregates them on

Naturally, there are some glitches. My own little experiment in creating a new blog a few days ago and listing an item for sale (a Motorola cell battery) didn't seem to work. As of last night I didn't see it, and while it's suddenly there this morning, you can find it only by searching the keyword battery, not Motorola (though both are in the headline of my listing). Also, I noticed some folks are playing games, such as listing a cup of coffee for sale. (Update: Ha! That was Keith himself, doing a demo as he notes in comments below.)

But it's soooo early--only about 1,400 listings so far. It will be interesting to see if this alternative to the "walled gardens" like Craigslist and eBay can overcome the challenges--among them, spam and the fact that putting a classified ad on your blog isn't the most obvious thing to do. Jeff Jarvis, for one, thinks the potential is even bigger than it looks.

That was me with the cup of coffee. Doing a test post for Om malik. We were in a Starbucks and I was talking so much I didn't drink it.
