So What's It Gonna Be?

Arik Hesseldahl

Okay, you know what I think. Feb. 28 will bring something big on the software side, and possibly an Intel-based iBook or iBook-equivalent. The rumor mills are starting to rumble with talk of a video iPod product with a bigger display, and the long-rumored "digital living room" product.

I'd like to know what you think. Let's have your speculation in the comments below.

I predict some sort of home theatre, entertainment device and software. Something that attaches to a Macintosh for set-up, programming, and maintenance. A TIVO type of device.

rumors rumors - video ipod, TIVO-ish mac mini, intel ibook, tablet ...

maybe they are all the same thing, or at least 'fit' together. I see the [former] ibook going seriously in the ipod direction design and 'pitch' wise - small, sleek, widescreen and 'at home' with the [former] mac mini - possibly the same footprint ... or ... maybe the base of the 'ibook' is a mac mini and the screen is a tablet

I think the keyword is "see", as in see movies and tv shows Apple style.

I predict that Steve Jobs will wear jeans and a black shirt when he announces this. He will also drink some bottled water and have some slides. The product itself will be widely publicized in the media.

You've always had a pluse on Apple Arik, so your speculation begs the question: Why do you believe this launch will also included something on the SW side of the house? Surely you have information we naves on the outside do not yes?...

If you SW speculation is correct, with NAB and the invitation " new products." would also indicate a consumer lean...

Fun products? iPhone maybe? Boombox for sure. New software product. Maybe new intel macs. Fun products...maybe a video game concle? just kidding about the last one. And not expecting the first one.

A video iPod for wide-screen movies, an iTunes store for video that will be filled with a plethora of movies and other video of all types from 1930 on, and files for download that are at least 640 wide and will easily play on Macs and PCs as well as the iPod. Nothing else would do, so that's what we are getting.

Seems like there are two types of Apple announcements. Either small, logical ones that just sort of offer obvious revisions and improvements to existing products, or major ones that introduce amazing new items. I tend to think this one will be more towards the tame varity, probably inline with an Intel iBook or Mini. Maybe even a 17" or 12" MacBook. Speculation about a completely new iPod or other new device is far fetched. Apple would put more marketing muscle in something so big (and probably have a more tantalizing invite for the press) or save it for a MacWorld or WWDC show keynote.

I predict, well, mostly hope for, a new Intel-based Mac mini... and MacBook... and, larger capacity iPod (say 80 or 100gb)... wishful thinking probably.

I remember Steve Jobes saying at MacWorld Expo, something like, "We still have some exciting things in line from Moterola"

Could this be one of them?

I want a Media Center Mac mini, but it ain't the announcement to come. At least not yet. Those Intel chips are sorely needed for the MBP and the soon to come iBook replacement.

Guess it'll be the long-rumored iPod boombox, some related software and iTMS addition of some kind.

Me thinks it might me a single core handheld/newton/ipod gizmo thingy ... it's gotta be coming one of these days...

What about the asteroid music device that was a hot rumor last year but which now seems to be forgotten?

This seems a small event. Such a device and accompanying stuff would fit the bill.

So, no iPod, no Macs, but music for me as guess #1.

I am hoping for the living room thing, though. But I guess we will have to wait a bit longer for that one.

My guess is an Intel based mac Mini at least. Maybe iBook?
