PROFESSIONAL: After a few years as a fellow at the National Institutes of Health, spent six years at Eli Lilly & Co. (LLY) and 17 years at SmithKline Beecham (GSK) in various research positions. Joined Wyeth (WYE) in 2000. Became head of R&D in 2002.
TOUGH MEDICINE: Believes scientists should be held to firm productivity goals. "People didn't like it. But I didn't care because I saw it was doable."
PIPE DREAM: To be a rock star. Played once publicly as part of a band with other aging pharma execs at a West Chester (Penn.) pub. "We didn't stink," he says. Among the selections: Hells Bells, by AC/DC.
PET PEEVE: Ruffolo was so irked by the expense of his wife's plans to buy a horse from the Netherlands that he insisted she name it Bob. Since then two others have joined the stable, Robert and Little Bob.
PERSONAL: Married, three children.
