Looking for Tiny TV?
So what if the number of Americans watching TV on their cell phone is as tiny as the screens they're viewing? That's not stopping Nokia, Motorola, Intel, Texas Instruments and other companies from promoting the heck out of the idea.
They've formed the Mobile DTV Alliance, aiming to create an open infrastructure in the U.S. for one flavor of the technology, called DVB-H.
The rollout already is underway in Europe and Asia, but as we've come to know and love from our American wireless carriers, there's lots of discussion and debate about which standard to use here. It seems the idea is to put a stake in the ground as Qualcomm's MediaFLO technology makes headway with Verizon.
One company to watch is Crown Castle International, which plans to launch 10 video channels and at least 24 audio channels under its Modeo service later this year.
