How bad is comment spam getting? Check it out, the Bach Door's Pete Shinbach has closed down shop.

Shutting down the blog because of some spam seems a bit rash. There are spam-prevention capabilities within blogger (captcha for instance), as well as the choice to use Haloscan or even switch to another platform (like Wordpress) entirely.

There is likely more to the story. I also use Blogger, like Shinbach, and have been for 2 1/2 years. I have had so few issues with comment SPAM that after turning on the SPAM-prevention options with Blogger, it's pretty non-existent.

Killing a blog because of SPAM is overkill. He could have just as easily turned off comments.
