Publishers and Podcasting

Heather Green

USA Today has an interesting story about how book publishers are turning to podcasts of book excerpts as publicity tools. I love the idea and where this can lead...instead of literary journals or in addition to what literary journals publish, you could have "magazines" of short stories, or short non-fiction that is read to you instead of you reading it.

Don't get me wrong. I would never want to replace the reading experience. I just like the idea of it expanding in new ways. WOuld love to hear NPR's Selected Shorts as podcasts.

Heather -

I heard the NPR short story picks on the radio Thursday and found it incredibly compelling. Mostly because the woman who was reading them was a critic, not a PR person.

I do like the idea of both hearing excerpts and full short stories but, as with audiobooks, I do think a great short story suffers if the voice talent is sub par. On the other hand, hearing Jeremy Irons read Lolita was the best pairing you could hope for.
