Conferences I've missed.

Bruce Nussbaum

Office meetings seem to be getting longer, more frequent and less productive. But conferences--at least on design, innovation and creativity--appear to be getting more interesting and more fruitful. I hate missing the good ones and I've just missed two. The AIGA annual conference in Boston in early September was terrific I hear. Luckily Jason Kotte was there and posted this great speech by Pentagram's Michael Bierut. It's on one of my favorite themes--you have to listen to be a great designer. Listen to your clients. Listen to the cultural context within which they live.

A second conference I'm missing right now is one put on by service innovation guru Jeneanne Rae. This members-only gathering by her company Peer Insight will talk about principles of building better consumer experiences, benchmarks, encouraging high-impact innovation and other good stuff. Innovation is hard enough but innovating within service companies is so much more difficult.

The most difficult task ahead? Replacing the word "experience." Aren't you sick of it already?
