AMD Ascendant

Cliff Edwards

Looks like Advanced Micro Devices isn't just putting a hurt on rival Intel on the legal front.

Research firm Mercury Research says AMD's x86 server chip market share jumped to 11.2% in the second quarter, from 7.4% previously. That shows AMD took share even as the overall market grew at a fast clip--and has got to be giving Intel's sales guys some headaches.

And is it me, or are you suddenly seeing a lot more ads for AMD-based notebooks in electronics stores fliers?

CEO Hector Ruiz is fond of saying AMD has the better technology, at cheaper prices. That may be true enough, but it's beginning to look like having a pending lawsuit against its nemesis isn't such a bad thing, either. Suddenly, pc and server makers are a lot more open about climbing aboard the AMD bandwagon.

Amazing 50% Q/Q growth. Also, we see a lot more AMD notebooks/desktops in retails store such as bestbuy and circuit city after the AMD lawsuit.
